SmoothWall GPL Project

The SmoothWall GPL project was founded in the summer of 2000 by Lawrence Manning (Principle Code Author) and Richard Morrell (Project Manager). Their goal was to create a Linux distribution that could convert a redundant PC into a security-hardened Internet firewall device.

Their efforts resulted in an open source network firewall called SmoothWall Express, which now protects over a million networks worldwide.

Demand for a commercially-supported version of this firewall grew so high that in October 2001, SmoothWall Ltd was established. As a commercial entity, SmoothWall Ltd now offers a comprehensive suite of sensibly priced Internet security products, based on open source solutions.

SmoothWall Ltd as a company continues to recognize its heritage in the Open Source community by funding the SmoothWall GPL project and other Open Source activities as well as progressively releasing commercially developed features back into GPL versions (Express and DansGuardian).
